1. Watch the movies EARTHLINGS and MEET YOUR MEAT.

2. Read the book MAD COWBOY: Plain Truth from the Cattle Rancher Who Won’t Eat Meat.

3. Replace milk with soymilk, rice milk, almond milk, oat milk, multigrain milk, and hemp milk. Especially tasty: Silk Chocolate Soymilk. Did you know cow’s milk causes acne! Think of cow’s milk as “liquid meat.”

4. Try Tofurky Deli Slices, Boca Burgers, and Gardenburgers. Mmmm. (All Tofurky choices are 100% vegan. Too bad the same can’t be said for the entire selection from the other two companies. Let’s keep emailing them until they evolve all their recipes.)

5. Treat yourself to Purely Decadent Ice Cream.

6. Practice cooking. There are no rules. Be flexible with ingredients. Whatever tastes good to you is a recipe that rocks.

7. Join or start a small vegan group to swap info and share in the fun.

8. Explore. Check out your local farmers market for fresh organic goodies. Visit health food stores and Asian supermarkets for the yummiest “mock meat.” Browse all the aisles.

WHAT BRANDS OF MOCK MEAT TASTE BETTER THAN ANIMAL MEAT?

Favorite brand: Chin Hsin Foods Company. Just look for the green bag in the freezer section for the many varieties, such as Vegan BBQ Pork.

Try Natural Food’s Vegan Gong Bao Chicken.

Check out these mock meat photos of nearly limitless options—so you know what to look for in your neighborhood Asian market. (Click on the name of each product to view photo and nutrition facts. Note that this company uses both the words “vegetarian” and “vegan” but EVERYTHING is vegan.)
THE POETRY OF THE LIVES OF ANIMALS

Consider the endless debates about animals: what they feel, what they think, what their behaviors mean. Often myths and mere speculations serve as facts about animals until proven otherwise decades or centuries later. All we know for certain is that their lives, like ours, remain a great mystery. And the more we experience, the more the wonder of that mystery grows.

Every life is fascinating. Every life travels a river of unrepeatable moments.
Every animal has a right to live out his or her own remarkable odyssey.

VIEW NICK BRANDT’S PHOTOS

His soulful portraits of animals are beautifully haunting because he didn’t use a telephoto lens.

EACH YEAR IN THE U.S. OVER 27 BILLION LAND ANIMALS AND FISH ARE KILLED TO BE EATEN

Among the dead are more than 40 million cows, calves, and steers; more than 99 million pigs; and about 9 billion chickens. (Fish, crustaceans, turkeys, sheep, and other animals make up the remaining casualties.) Now we can understand how Hitler easily executed trainload after trainload after trainload of people during the Holocaust without the majority of the German population ever seeing or hearing a thing.

An example of what this rate of nonstop murder means mathematically: in slaughterhouses everywhere across America, about 1 million chickens are butchered…every hour.

A COW’S BRAIN HAS NEARLY THE SAME NUMBER OF CONVOLUTIONS AS A HUMAN BRAIN. AND LIKE US, COWS DREAM.

WHY FARMERS SHOOT SHEEP WHO LEARN HOW TO OPEN THE LATCH ON THE GATE OF THEIR CORRAL–SO THEY WON’T TEACH OTHER SHEEP TO DO THE SAME AND ESCAPE.

THE MYTH OF COMPASSIONATE MURDER

The trendy concept of “humane slaughter” is a seductive gimmick to absolve guilt and to sanction chowing down on a chicken’s leg or a cow’s rib or a pig’s belly.

When chain supermarkets such as Whole Foods and so-called animal welfare organizations propose “humane slaughter,” that’s actually like saying, “Let me offer you the world’s most comfortable electric chair or gas chamber.”

“Humane practices” aren’t nearly as cost-efficient as current gruesome methods, and cutting costs is always the first priority for any business. Even when the “commodity” is living, breathing, feeling, and suffering. Or thirsty, starving, and horribly mutilated. (Cruelty is old as history. Just recall the slave ships from Africa, their hellish hulls brimming with human “cargo.”)

At best, “humane slaughter” is nothing more than a pathetic fantasy. The staggering number of animals who must be murdered and packaged renders it physically impossible.

To advocate anything less than complete abolition of factory farming is to be an accomplice to the meat empire’s tradition of torture.

LULU: A PIG WHO’S LIKE LASSIE

Joanne Altsmann was suffering a heart attack. Luckily, Lulu was also in the kitchen. Lulu busted through the puny doggie door—ignoring painful bloody cuts and scrapes to herself—and dashed off to seek help for her friend. Lulu plopped down in the street to halt a car. Then she led the driver back to Joanne. Lulu was awarded a gold medal of honor for her bravery and quick-thinking.
(This story aired on 20/20, ABC TV, 9/27/99.)
